A Father's Creed
My son, when we fight — and fight we will —
I stand in front and you stand behind.
Not because I’m stronger, or because you need protection — you don’t.
I’m not your shield. I’m your man.
I lead the way to show you where it’s safe.
I clear the path — not to make the road easy,
but so you have a fair shot at success.
Sometimes we go together.
Sometimes you go on your own.
And when you fall — when you break —
I’ll be there.
I’ll pick you up.
I’ll put you back together again.
You owe me nothing.
Not a goddamn thing.
Always know what you’re owed,
and never expect payment as a sure thing.
People will let you down.
I never will.
Because a man does for others,
and only hopes for something in return.
Make your own way.
Follow another if you must.
Nothing is concrete —
and even concrete can be smashed.
Fight for love,
or let it go.
It doesn’t all work out —
and those are lumps too.
Live life with passion,
and know you’ll piss people off.
Sleep like a baby,
because every day you fought your hardest —
with your dad by your side.
No — not by your side.
He’s in front.
Too busy clearing the way.
