Fact Check Me: Regret Is a Sign You Grew
Hindsight is 20/20, so it's easy to look back at who you were and feel guilty.
But sometimes you have to stop for a moment and remember what you were carrying.
Maybe the load was heavy. Maybe there were forces working against you. Maybe you lacked the confidence, awareness, or experience to make the decisions that seem so obvious now.
Maybe that wasn't failure.
Maybe that was growth.
Life doesn't come with a manual. There isn't a path waiting for you to follow. Most of us are just trying to figure it out one decision at a time, learning from the ones we got wrong.
You can't expect an earlier version of yourself to know what only a later version of you could have learned.
So maybe regret isn't proof that you lived badly.
Maybe it's proof that you learned.
If you cringe at something you once said, feel embarrassed by the person you used to be, or wish you had handled a situation differently, that's often a sign you've become someone different. Your standards changed. Your understanding deepened. Your perspective expanded.
The past doesn't change.
You do.
The people who scare me aren't the ones haunted by their mistakes. They're the ones who can explain every mistake away. They have a reason for everything, an excuse for everyone they hurt, and a story that always casts them as the hero.
They don't grow because nothing is ever their fault.
Regret isn't comfortable, but neither is growth. They often arrive together.
I'd rather feel the sting of regret than the comfort of believing I never needed to change.
Fact check me: sometimes regret isn't the weight holding you back.
It's the proof you kept moving forward.
